Thursday Tap™ Takeover: Brasserie Dupont’s Spéciale Belge & Glassware Night

This week’s Thursday Tap™ is another “Takeover” theme night (that means you can join in the fun in the back room or just come to regular ole Jimmy’s No. 43 and partake of the usual mix of libations, great food and even better company). Following upon the heels of the very successful Ültimate Mahr’s Bräu Beer Night and Dinner, where five of our 12 taps poured rare Mahr’s Bräu brews, we’re letting the fine folks at Brasserie Dupont take over several taps and add some unusual and interesting bottles to our regular beer line-up.

First up is a rare keg of Spéciale Belge. As described by Brasserie Dupont, “Spéciale Belge is a refreshing amber beer, slightly fruity with a lightly caramelized malt flavor, and lightly laced with smoke.  Because of the signature Dupont yeast, this is a rather drier take on the style.  There is a bit of clove at the beginning and the end.”

Additionally, we’ll have Dupont Rédor Pils, a bottom fermentation “pils” beer that is filtrated but not pasteurized. This beer is a pure malt pils that uses only barley malt as starch, leaving a bitterness that reflects the pils’ tradition. And what would be a Dupont night without the famous Saison Dupont. We’ll also have Foret Blanche in the bottle, a Belgian-style witbier.

As if that weren’t enticement enough to come on down to Jimmy’s No. 43 (on another hot Thursday… the basement is cool, my friends!), we’ll also have special guest, Lauren Shor, Dupont’s rep who will be having a glassware giveaway along with selected tastings. Find out how the glass brings out the flavor in the beer, and maybe score the perfect chalice to add to your collection.

Wanna Eat, Drink Local? We’ve got you covered!

At Jimmy’s No. 43, it’s always “Eat, Drink Local” week, but we love being a part of Edible‘s annual event focused on locally sourced food and beverages. Obviously, we are emphasizing the drink part of Eat, Drink Local week, with wine from North Fork Long Island (Paumonock) and Finger Lakes region (Fox Run, Thirsty Owl); along with beer from Ommegang, Three Heads, Greenport Harbor and Carton.

When it comes to food, the majority of our menu’s ingredients are locally sourced. This week we have beer-braised chicken sourced from Violet Hill Farm, salad greens from Evolutionary Organics in New Paltz, chorizo and grassfed beef from Sugar Hill Farm, and our grain dishes (polenta, spelt) from Cayuga Pure Organics.

We hope you’ll avail yourself of our local menu this week, and celebrate the NYC food scene by eating—and drinking—local!

A Truly Ültimate Night With Mahr’s Bräu

Mahr's Bräu owner Stephan Michel models his Lederhosen along side Shelton Brother Joel.

One of the things Jimmy’s No. 43 prides itself on is being the home to unusual and interesting beers. We love it when one of the “little guys” makes it over to see us, whether that brew is from New Jersey or Europe.

Last night we held the Ültimate Mahr’s Bräu Beer Night and Dinner with owner Stephan Michel and other beer luminaries as we paired some of Stephan’s favorite beers (he hand picked the choices) with a German family-style beer dinner.

Stephan talked passionately about Mahr’s Bräu’s role as a traditional, historical, small brew pub in Germany (in this case, Bamberg). His beers showcase subtle German styles—weisse,weisse bock, variations on pils-hells-kellerbiers—in traditional German gravity casks. He discussed his guerrilla marketing techniques he uses against German mega-breweries.

Stephan also models a chic pair of Lederhosen, even going to far as to demonstrate how to open the fly (flap)! It was all in good fun to relate the traditional habits of Bavarian men at beer fests.

Of particular note was the order of the beers he selected at the dinner:

  1. Weisse – started with less or minimal hops;
  2. Weisse bock – naturally sweet, malty;
  3. Eta Hoffman- a subtle dunkel lager;
  4. Then “leicht” – a 2.8% ABV with bright hoppiness, which perked up our mouths after the sweeter darker malt beers. A real revelation because of its low alcohol content;
  5. Ungespundet.

We finished out the evening with a gravity cask of unfiltered. Truly an amazing beer night (and many of these beers are still available for purchase).

It’s Thursday Über Tap With Mahr’s Bräu

Tonight we are open to all, but we hope you’ll join us for Thursday Tap™, where we’ll be celebrating a tap takeover (we’re calling it the Über Tap) by Mahr’s Bräu. We’ll have plenty of Mahr’s beer, along with American craft brews and our regular menu. So come in and cool off at Jimmy’s NO. 43.

In addition, our back room will play host to an  Ültimate Mahr’s Bräu Beer Night and Dinner (a handful of tickets remain, or ask at the door!). We will have multiple rare beers from Bamberg’s smallest and, arguably, best brewery. Among the offerings are:

  • Weisse – Classic Wheat
  • Der Weisse Bock
  • ETA Hoffman Dunkel – Dark Lager
  • Ungespundet – Unfiltered Lager
  • Unfiltered Pils  –  Gravity Pour Cask

If you’re looking to pair your great German brews with amazing German food, consider joining us for the dinner with special guest Mahr’s Bräu owner Stephan Michel. Family-style traditional German offerings and additional bottles will be paired for a beer night and dinner that is truly “Ültimate.”

A Few Tickets Remain for Thursday’s Ültimate Mahrs Bräu Beer Night and Dinner

After the success (and sell-out) of our Ultimate Nøgne Ø Beer Night and Dinner, there’s a lot of buzz about our next big beer dinner, this Thursday, June 21st, at 7 p.m.  Here’s what Time Out NY has to say about the Ültimate Mahrs Bräu Beer Night and Dinner:

“Get familiar with Mahr’s Bräu at this beer dinner, when Jimmy’s No. 43 hands over four of its taps to the German brewery—one of the most coveted producers in the famous beer town of Bamberg.
