In like a German, out like a Ghost! What we have on tap for October.

Fall is one of our favorite seasons at Jimmy’s No. 43. We see a lot of our friends coming back into the city, visiting their favorite haunts, and drinking more interesting and unusual beers than we can name! Coming up for us this month are three (count ’em – 3!!) new beer dinners, the return of Harvest Beer & Cider Sessions, plus farm fresh foods straight from regional producers adding goodness to our food menu.
This week we’ll be continuing with our Real Oktoberfest, tapping Franconian gravity casks on Saturday (with a special German sausage and potato salad paired with a pint for only $15). This past weekend we tapped the Weissenohe Bioland Export Beer. It was delish with the sausage plate.
We’ll be bringing in additional menu items, including Belle Rouge chickens from Violet Hill Farm (West Winfield, NY), which we plan to brine in beer and serve up with farro risotto and braised kale. Plus, at the end of the month we’ll be having some frest products from Vermont shipped in… as in literally shipped in via Vermont Sail Freight Project!
Our three key prix fixe dinners for the month are already selling, so be sure to join us for:
  • October 16th – “Sacred & Profane” Jewish pork dinner (we told you, it’s sacred and profane) paired with Abbey Ales as a part of our Abbey Beer Week (October 10-17). Tickets available here.
  • October 21st – Cider Week NY prix fixe cider dinner with Farnum Hill’s Steve Wood. This one sold out last year and is a highlight of Cider Week NY (October 18-27). Tickets here.
  • October 28th – The aforementioned Vermont Sail 5-course prix fixe dinner. Menu TBA (we’re putting in the order this week, but we can promise real maple syrup will be involved) and tickets available here.

Plus lots of cool Thursday Taps coming up (Vicaris Generaal!, pumpkin beers + carving for Halloween) and oysters and Tuesday Tastings and happy hour and lots more. We’re excited and can’t wait to see you at Jimmy’s No. 43.

Thursday Tap™: Autumnation and Return of LI Oysters!

How do we know summer is officially over? It’s the return of local oysters to Jimmy’s No. 43. And how do we know fall is here? Because fresh hop beers start coming in.

For today’s Thursday Tap™, we’ll be pouring Sixpoint’s Autumnation is a 6.7% ABV hop harvest ale, featuring a fresh “wet hop” chosen by Sixpoint fans. Every year,  the Red Hook, Brooklyn, brewery takes it to the public for a vote: Which hop should they use to create their Autumnation? Well, this year we’re in great good fortune, as they’re making a fresh hop beer Mosaic, which provides this hearty copper ale with bright citrus, berry and pine flavors, along with aromatic notes of earth, strawberry and stonefruit.

This beer will be the first of several fresh hop beers we will tap at Jimmy’s No. 43 in the next few weeks (beers TBA, as they are shipped). As always, Thursday Tap™ starts at 5 p.m., while supplies last, and with regular bar/restaurant and—yay!—oyster service available.

We’re Tapping Casks for Oktoberfest + German Lunch for $15!

For the next few Saturdays, while supplies last, Jimmy’s No. 43 will be hosting “The Real Oktoberfest” with a rotation of German gravity casks, sausages and pretzels. We’re sourcing a full selection of Flying Pigs Farm sausages (brats, chorizo, etc.) and whipping up German potato salad (bacon alert!) to go on the side. Plus, from 1-5 p.m. Saturday afternoon, $15 gets you one Oktoberfest cask ale, sausage and potato salad. It’s a German lunch deal you can’t beat!

Specific casks we’ll be tappying include:

  • Weissenohe Bioland Export
  • Mahr’s Unfiltered Pils
  • Weissenohe Bonator
  • Löwenbräu Buttenheim Kellerbier
  • Krauss Lager Hell
  • Mahr’s Ungespundet

Also, pay as you go, pair as you like, with regular bar/restaurant service available.

On a side note, the beers—which come from Shelton Brothers Imports—are very sessionable. While we don’t recommend taking his advice, Joel Shelton admits, “I once drank six liters at Oktoberfest and then drove. No problem!”

So drink (but don’t drive) like a Bavarian, and celebrate The Real Oktoberfest like a good German beer lover should. While supplies last.

It’s Not Too Late To Make Dinner Plans: Vegetarian Nonsense™ Returns Tonight!

We still have a few tickets left for tonight’s Sour Beer Vegetarian Nonsense™ Dinner! Our friends at Shelton Brothers have chosen some of their (and our!) favorite sour beers to pair with an all-vegetarian (not vegan) menu. This was one of our favorite beer dinners last spring, and the autumn is a perfect time to revisit this theme.

Come get your sour on with…

  • Drei Fonteinen, Blonde
  • Jolly Pumpkin, Luciernaga
  • Mikkeller, Alive
  • Panil (a sour from Italy)
  • Alvinne, Cuvee Freddy

For dishes, we’ll be pairing sour beers with cheeses from Anne Saxelby, polenta/grits from Cayuga Pure Organics, plus sweet potato-savory pie, sautéed Brussels sprouts and an apple tart for dessert.

You can still grab your tickets ($45 + tax/gratuity) here. We’re gonna have a great crowd, so we hope you’ll join in the Sour Beer fun!

Bring on the Fall Beers: Barrier, German casks, Fresh hops and more!

Okay, okay… we still have a few more days of what is technically labeled “summer” but we saw the Harvest Moon last night and it got us thinking about what we love most when the days grow short and the nights grow chill: Amazing seasonal beers.

First up, tonight, we’ll have Barrier Brewing in the house for Thursday Tap™. Then, this coming Saturday, we start our Real Oktoberfest celebration, where every Saturday afternoon for the next few weeks we’ll be tapping authentic German gravity casks (two per Saturday) from the Bamberg region (casks we’ll be rotating through are listed here). Future beer themes include Fresh Hopped beers (starting with next week’s Thursday Tap™ with Sixpoint Autumnation) and Abbey Ale week (October 10-17).

Coming back to this evening, however, Barrier Brewing will be bringing several kegs  to Jimmy’s No. 43 for an early start to your weekend. These are beers you may not be able to find together without a trip out to the brewery. The line-up includes:

Bumble: Double Wheat IPA – 8.5% alc/vol.

Copper in appearance with an eggshell head. 40% of the grain-bill consists of wheat which contributes a full bodied, bready, slightly tart malt backbone. 3 hop varieties have this beer bursting at the seams with tropical fruit, ripe melon & mango citrus .

Oblong: Dark Strong Rye – 8.5% alc/vol.

Pours a deep, dark mahogany with blood red edges and khaki-colored head. Aroma is full of piney, herbaceous hops on top of an earthy malt character. Flavors are full of resinous hops, peppery rye malt, bitter chocolate, cacao nibs, gentle alcohol warmth, and maple syrup. Crisp, herbal, earthy, complex.

Red Button: Imperial Red Ale – 8.8% alc/vol.

Appearance is crimson Red with a khaki-Beige head. Deep dark fruitiness with slight toffee, caramel & chocolate notes. Aroma is dominated by intense pine sap, wood & citrus.

Rembrandt: Robust Porter – 6.4% alc/vol.

Pours a midnight brown with faint red edges and creamy, khaki-colored head. Rich, nutty, malted milk ball aromas compliment the full-bodied roastiness of this beer. Hop bitterness is restrained to allow the heavily roasted malts to create most of the balancing bitterness. Malt flavors are layered and complex with notes of coffee, cocoa powder, and soft almond fruitiness with a smooth, velvety texture.

As always the fun starts at 5 p.m. with regular bar/restaurant service still available. Join us!
