Beer For Lent Fasters… And Everyone Else!

Once a year, Schlenkerla brewery creates an historic and specific cask beer for the Lenten Season. Happily, we’ll be tapping a cask of Schlenkerla Fastenbier (5.6% ABV) this Thursday, March 15 at 4 p.m. While we hope the supply lasts the weekend, if you want to get your glass, be sure to join us when Jimmy Carbone will be pouring this traditional beer.

The history of Fastenbier starts with Heller-Trum Brewery in Bamberg, Germany. They brew Aecht Schlenkerla Fastenbier once each year for release during Lent. The Fastenbier uses half Schlenkerla smoke malt and half pilsner malt; the finished beer is left completely unfiltered so as to deliver a heartier, more full-bodied beer for the Lent fast (liquida non frangunt ieunum – liquids do not break the fast). Thus, no reason not to try this amazing brew!

Celebrate St. Patrick’s With Dieu Du Ciel

Remembering Japan… One Year Later

It was a year ago when most of us watched the devastation from afar as a tsunami destroyed much of northeastern Japan. For us at Jimmy’s No. 43, it took several days to find out that our beer friends were okay. However, many brewers were affected by the disaster and we did our best to help them in their time of need.

Now on the rebound, one of our favorite Japanese breweries, Hitachino, has been featured the week leading up to the anniversary of the tsunami. The best part? We had an amazing celebration with Hitachino owner Mr. Toshi Kuichi, who was at Jimmy’s No. 43 with his daughter and some amazing brews (both beer and sake). We were happy to be at the party. If you missed it, check out our Facebook page for a pictorial recap.

Second Annual Duck-off Celebrates Quackers

It was another successful cook-off at Jimmy’s No. 43 this past weekend, when professional and amateur cooks convened to support Food Systems Network NYC. Best of Show and People’s Choice went to Susan Palmer, The Girl in the Little Red Kitchen, who presented a foie-gras-infused deviled egg with maple and coffee cured duck bacon. Honorable mentions went to Adrian Ashby (for originality with his Duck Donut) and Gina Keatley (best presentation for her duck risotto). There were several write-ups praising the event, including:
