As many of you are aware, we lost a great friend this week. Ray Deter, co-founder of The Good Beer Seal and Jimmy’s partner in crime over at Beer Sessions Radio, was struck by a car and killed while riding his bike. Ray is beloved by so many beer lovers that frequented his d.b.a. bars (among other establishments). Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family as they grieve. We hope everyone who knew Ray will raise a glass in his honor. The Times wrote up a nice obit. You can read it here.
A great opportunity will be presented when craft beer guru, our good friend, and President of the New York City Homebrewer’s GuildChris Cuzme joins us in offering up a two-part course on the history and evolution of IPAs.
Chris will dive into the history of India Pale Ales from historical English IPA historical, through the evolution of American IPAs and Imperial IPAs. Of course no good education goes without taste tests, so your “tuition” will include tastings along with animated discussion. Special guests from local breweries (such as Sean McCain of Victory) will be in attendance to share and discuss their versions and chime in.
Class 1 – August 4th: The history and lore (and myths) of India Pale Ales, featuring English IPAs and traditional recipes
Class 2 – August 11th: New World IPA in America and the Craft Beer Revolution, featuring American and Imperial IPAs
Each class is $25, with tickets available here for Traditions or here for New World. Classes start at 7 p.m. and will last approximately one hour.
Tonight marks (in no particular order) the end of June, the unofficial start to what will be a four-day holiday weekend for a lot of people, and Edible New York’s final event in 2011’s Eat/Drink/Local Week: East End Oysters Night at Jimmy’s No. 43. Last night Eddie “Oysters” (who is currently in training to be the world’s fastest oyster shucker) gave us a preview of the great oysters that will be served up courtesy of Blue Island Oysters (all you can eat tickets are $35; get yours before you head over to the bar). Let’s just say these are some damn good oysters!

As a part of Edible’s 3rd annual “Eat Drink Local” week, Jimmy’s No. 43 will be hosting the culminating event of the week! Our East End Oyster Night, co-sponsored by Blue Island Oysters. will offer all-you-can-eat oysters from the East End of Long Island. The event will offer up precious Blue Points along with “Naked Cowboy Oysters,” wild-harvested bivalves named after the Naked Cowboy himself (he’s scheduled to make an appearance).
