Sour Beer Weekend – With Saturday Bacon Pairing Guided Tasting

AprilSours2012_6BeersWe’re heading into fall and before we launch our Oktoberfest in a week or so, we’re celebrating the official end of summer with sours! These beers are suddenly all the trend, but we’ve been curating a menu replete with great sour brews for years.
Of course, sour beers make for great food pairings, but we wonder if some of their popularity of late may stem from wine drinkers discovering craft beer. And if you aren’t into hoppy IPAs, the line of sours we carry are a nice break from the bitter!

This past summer, NY Times food editor Eric Asimov wrote that Peekskill’s Simple Sour was his top beer of the summer. It’s a Berliner Weisse style that we have carried regularly.

In fact, we’re so psyched for sours that we’re doing a special guided tasting tomorrow afternoon (tickets here). We’re trying to cover a broader spectrum of sour styles, including Belgian Grand Cru and Flemish reds, German goses, and the best of Belgium (Lambics, Guezes, etc.).

Here are some of Jimmy Carbone’s notes on the sour beers he loves, including some that will be at tomorrow’s tasting:

  • *Off Color Troublesome Gose (from Chicago) – “To me it’s a wheat-gose hybrid; it’s refreshing, not so sour as a pure gose.
  • *”Bayrisher Bahnhof (from Leipzig, Germany) – “They revived the Leipziger gose style after the wall came down in eastern Germany. I really like their Berliner Weisse, in particular the buckwheat Berliner Weisse. It has more malt body than typical Berliner Weisses.”
  • *Sour in the Rye by The Bruery (California) – “A great sour rye aged in barrels.”
  • *Rodenbach Grand Cru Flemish Red (Belgium) – “Each year at BBQ events like NYC’s Pig Island, I pair the Rodenbach with head cheese for breakfast!”
  • *Surette Provisional Saison by Crooked Stave (Colorado) – “A barrel-aged lambic-style sour that is very popular right now.”
We hope you’ll come down this weekend and get your tart fix at Jimmy’s No. 43 (regular bar and restaurant service is available).

It’s September! Bring on the Sour!

After what felt like an entire summer crammed into a week, the weather has turned positively autumnal. And with the Harvest Moon on the rise, we’re looking forward to our new fall menu and a couple of very cool beer events coming up in the next couple weeks.

To start us off right, this Saturday, September 13th, owner Jimmy Carbone (also the host of Beer Sessions Radio on the Heritage Radio Network) will be raiding the cellar for a Sour Beer Sampler. For only $35, you’ll get six pours of some amazing sour brews paired with bacon snacks, as Jimmy does a guided tasting of some of his favorite sour beers.

Tentative beer list (subject to change):

  • *Off Color Troublesome Gose (from Chicago)
  • *Tilquin Gueze (from Belgium)
  • *Singlecut Beersmiths “Kim” Sour Sash Sherry Beer(Astoria, Queens)
  • *Alvinne Undressed(Belgium)
  • 2 more TBD

Tickets can be purchased here.

Then, later this month, we’ll be featuring the perfect fall/Oktoberfest when we have our smoked beer week (September 22-28). Each night we’ll be offering suggested smoked beers and food pairings (pay as you go), or if you’re really digging the scene, join us for a five-course Smoked + Smoked prix fixe beer dinner with Jon Lundbom of B. United on Monday, September 22nd. Among the beers we hope to offer (subject to availability, with menu to follow):

  • *Schlenkerla (of course!)
  • *Almond 22 Torbatta
  • *Carrobiollo 1111
  • *De Dues Toccata
  • *La Goutte D’Or Charbonnier
  • *BFM BATS
  • *Bayrischer Bahnhof Berliner Weisse w/oak smoked wheat

Tickets for the Smoked + Smoked prix fixe dinner ($45) are available here.

And, of course, our craft beer kitchen is always available for regular service, along with a great selection of sours, local beers on tap, ciders and wines from NY State.

Wrap Up Summer at Jimmy’s No. 43

BON-BON-SLIDEAs we head into the holiday weekend, our eyes are looking ahead to September 6th, when we’ll return to Red Hook for the fifth annual Pig Island. But we’ve still got the holiday Labor Day weekend first, and we’ll be pouring some of our favorite end-of-summer brews to head into September with a splash.

Among some of the new beers we’ll be serving on draught this weekend are:

Off Color from Chicago
  • *Troublesome Gose – a blend of two different beers, weighing in at 4.5% ABV: “The base beer is fermented with a wheat yeast strain and spiced with coriander, while the second beer is fermented solely with Lactobacillus which makes up about 20% of the volume.”
  • *Scurry – a 5.3% dark altbier
New from Singlecut Beersmiths
  • *”Bon Bon” 2 X TNT IIPA (double IPA) – an 8.2% ABV that’s dropping today (8/28)! We’ll have one of the first kegs.
One of our favorites from Barrier Brewing
  • *Evil Giant Rye IPA – a 6.4% ABV American IPA
And from The Other Half
  • *Hop Showers IPA – at 7.4% ABV, one of the best received new beers of the year
Our summer menu is still in effect, but look for our expanded fall menu to premiere the week of September 8th.

Ramen Pop-Up Shop, Sunday

We’ll be welcoming back the noodle boys from Menma tomorrow night (August 24th) for their Ramen Pop-Up at our craft beer kitchen. Please join us (regular bar service is available). We’ll have some awesome sour beer pairing recommendations!

A Week in the Life of Jimmy’s No. 43

While we love nothing more than to hang out at the bar with both old friends and new craft beer lovers, we here at Jimmy’s No. 43—along with owner Jimmy Carbone—spend a lot of time checking out the craft beer and sustainable food community beyond our East Village craft beer kitchen. So, for fun, Jimmy documented his whereabouts last week, as he ventured from Long Island to Governors Island and from Alphabet City to Albany! Take a look at what we do in any given week, and drop by to chat with us this week over one of our great beers!

On Monday, Jimmy was working out the details for next year’s NYC Brewers Choice, which will have even more beers sourced with NY State Ingredients. Pictured is Mark Sorrell of Cornell University, who is leading research on growing barley and other grains for beer in NY. Brewers Choice will take place on Thursday, February 26th, 2015 (venue TBA).

Tuesday

On Tuesday after taping Beer Sessions Radio™, the studio panel cracked open several bottles of Hill Farmstead, including a special collaboration beer made with Luc “Bim” Lafontaine of Dieu du Ciel!.

On Wednesday, we hung out at Jimmy’s No. 43 with brewmaster Loren Taylor-Raymond of Third Rail Beer, which will be launching on Saturday (August 23rd) at One Mile House. We got to preview the new Saison.

On Thursday, Jimmy headed up to Albany as part of the Governor’s new NY Craft Brewer Workgroup. Jimmy was talking NY grains, malts, and craft beer at Brown’s Brewing in Troy with Paul Leone of the NY State Brewers Association, Fred Matt of F.X. Matt Brewing Company, and FarmHouse Brewery owner Natalie Mattrazzo.

On Friday, we got to sample Sticke Handwerker, a Secret Engine/Rocky Point collaboration beer (following their cask launch on Thursday at St. Gambrinus).

And, finally, on Saturday, we were back out on Governors Island with the Jazz Age Lawn Party, where we were serving up our 20s-themed menu. Great food, great beer, great friends, great fun! A week in the life…
