Bacon & Belgians, Sour Beer Weekend to Welcome June

20130505_104436This week we are celebrating (finally and we hope for good!) the return of nice weather, longer days, and some very amazing beers. Coming up tomorrow, we welcome back Bacon & Belgians with a meet-the-brewer event and prix fixe dinner featuring the beers of Dominique Friart, fourth generation owner of Brasserie St. Feuillien from Belgium.

Modeled on our “Bacon & Belgians” event, this sit-down dinner (tickets here) will pair Belgian beers from Artisanal Imports with various bacons, charcuterie and bacon-based entrees created by guest chef Annette Tomei.

The menu includes:

  • Bacon and Herb Popcorn for all!
  • 1st Course: BLT Crostini / St. Feuillien Saison
  • 2nd Course: Crispy Veal Sweetbread with St. Fueillien Bacon-Mushroom Ragout and Leeks “vinaigrette” / St. Feuillien La Blanche
  • 3rd Course: Bacon-wrapped Market Fish “En Pappilote” with Spring Vegetables / St. Feuillien Belgian Coast IPA (collaboration beer with Green Flash, brewed in Belgium)
  • 4th Course: Heritage Pork Summer-style Carbonnade on Zucchini Noodles / St. Feuillien Brune
  • Dessert: Dark Chocolate Pudding with Ginger and Maple Candied Bacon / St. Feuillien Grand Cru

Later this week, we’ll be celebrating Sour Beer Weekend. From June 5th through June 8th, we’ll have a special selection of lambics, bretts, gueuzes available for purchase. Plus, as this weekend is also the Big Apple BBQ, we are inspired to offer a tasting that combines sour beers with some of our favorite bacons! On Saturday at 4 p.m., you can join B. United’s Jon Lundbom with a very cool line-up of sour beers that we will pair with our favorite smoked pork treat! Beers will include:

  • Hanssens Cassis
  • Ichtegem’s Grand Cru
  • Alvinne Wild Undressed
  • Prof. Fritz Briem 1809 Berliner Weisse
  • Montegioco Quarta Runa
  • Del Ducato Beersel Mattina

Please join us all weekend long for sour beers and get your tickets to Saturday’s tasting here.

Looking ahead: New Amsterdam Market After Party This Saturday

20130905_070228The New Amsterdam Market returns this Saturday, and we’re not just bringing Jimmy’s No. 43 to the market (in the form of our Summer Rig, which will be serving up chickens from Bobo’s Poultry and ribs from Flying Pigs Farm) but we’re bringing the market to Jimmy’s No. 43 in the form of an after party!

NAM’s opening day runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., after which we’re inviting friends of NAM and foodies alike to drop in for an informal party that will include menu items from the day’s market vendors. We expect to have:

  • *More meats from our Summer Rig BBQ Smoker
  • *Hard ciders from Aaron Burr
  • *Dandelion (and other artisanal) Wine from Enlightenment Wines
  • *Cheese plates from Saxelby cheesemongers
  • *Plus produce and meats from Runner and Stone, Catskills Provisions, Raven & Boar, Brooklyn Cured and Kings County Jerky

We will also have on draft some new breweries from the region, including Radiant Pig, The Other Half, Barrier Brewing and other craft beer favorites.

In years past, we’ve had similar dinners after the market with our good friends Les and Nova of Wild Gourmet Foods, so we may have ad hoc parties and tastings after each of the NAM markets taking place throughout the summer.
Let’s make Jimmy’s No. 43 a summer clubhouse, with great food and drink from local farmers, brewers and cider/wine makers! Please join us in toasting the official start of summer and our friends at NAM (regular service available pay-as-you-go)!

The Bronx is Down! Gun Hill Brewing Night at Jimmy’s No. 43

GunHillBrewing2We have a very exciting (Memorial Day) weekend coming up, with a three-tap takeover of beer from the Bronx’s newest brewery, Gun Hill Brewing Co. Join owners Dave Lopez and Kieran Farrell (pictured) along with industry reps as we pour three of brewer Chris Sheehan’s best brews:

  • *The flagship Gun Hill IPA (6.75% American IPA)
  • *Thunderdog Stout, a 5.9% ABV sweet-style stout
  • *Revolution Red Rye, a 6.1% ABV seasonal offering

And have you heard? Jimmy’s No. 43 is taking it on the road with our Summer BBQ Rig. This weekend, you can also check out Gun Hill Brewing in their native environment (that would be 3227 Laconia Avenue, off the Burke Ave 2 train – walk east to Laconia; you can also take the 5 to Gun Hill and walk west: weekend + MTA = 5 train doesn’t go to Burke!), when we’ll have our smoker parked outside the brewery on Saturday, May 24th, from noon until 7 p.m.

Aside from getting to see Gun Hill Brewing’s tasting room, we’ll be serving up such summertime fare as slow-cooked pork, BBQ mushrooms (served with grits), our famous biscuits and gravy, pork & Asian slaw tacos, chicken sausages, hot dogs and more. And if your haunt leans more towards Queens and lagers, we’ll be at Singlecut with the Summer Rig on Sunday.

Come out tonight and get a Gun Hill Brewing preview, and join us for the best pop-up BBQ the city has to offer this weekend at the breweries.

Celebrate the Ukrainian Street Fest with Brewski’s Lager

This weekend is the annual St. George Ukrainian Fest on 7th Street, and we’re hoping you’ll come celebrate before during and after with us! Jimmy’s No. 43 is part of the “brewmuda triangle,” as we share an address with two other bars. Jerry Kuziw built Burp Castle, Brewski’s (now Standings) and the basement that is now home to Jimmy’s No. 43 in the 1980s. It was the birth place of the new NYC craft beer scene that was formed here: home brew groups came together at this address; James Beard Award Winner Garrett Oliver’s first beers were discovered in this location.

Fast forward to 2014, Jerry has teamed with Greg Zaccardi of High Point Brewing to create a Brewski Golden Lager, which we’ll feature all weekend to coincide with the Ukrainian Festival. Greg is one of the better German-style brewers in the northeast, and we think this beer is perfect with both pierogies and shashlik!

And, of course, we’ll have a full slate of great American beers as we close out American Craft Beer Week at Jimmy’s No. 43!

Sure, we love our Belgians and our hyper-local brews, but we also enjoy the chance to celebrate the great state of beer in America. From California to Maine or Portland to Tampa, craft beer options have never been so rich. During American Craft Beer Week, we’ll be offering lots of amazing beers, including new launches and a Prix Fixe Market Dinner with all NYC Brewers Guild beers.

Among our events and tastings for ACBW:

  • *New Beer Tuesday (5/13): We’ll be tapping a keg of Ultramagnetic, a 6% ABV amber ale that is a collaboration brew between Proletariat, The Other Half and FoJ (friend of Jimmy’s) Brian Strumke of Stillwater. Brewed with German malts and spelt, fermented with a French farmhouse yeast, bittered with Zythos and dry hopped with 22 lbs of East Kent Goldings, this ale is perfect for ACBW.
  • *Wednesday’s Prix Fixe Market Dinner with NYCBG beer pairings (5/14): Guest chef Annette Tomei will hit the Union Square Greenmarket this Wednesday for a fresher-than-fresh dinner that will be created only using ingredients available that day. So we’re pairing the market basket meal with the freshest of beer options: all NYC-made beers! Tickets available here.
  • *The launch of Brewski’s Lager, made by Greg Zaccardi at Ramstein/High Point Brewing in NJ.
  • *Plus some of our favorite beers from Evil Twin (The Cowboy Smoked Pilsner, brewed at Two Roads in CT), Carton’s Red Rye Returning, Singlecut Beersmith’s Billy Half Stack IPA, with many others to surprise you this week.

And, of course, our craft beer kitchen will be open to serve you great food to pair with your American beers. Join us this week and toast ACBW!
