Cider Week Returns with Harvest Beer & Cider Sessions: Wide World of Cider

Jimmy’s No. 43 is happy to be co-hosting the official launch party for Cider Week NY: Harvest Beer & Cider Sessions this Saturday, October 19th from 1-4 p.m. We’ll have dozens of ciders in a walk-around tasting format. Your $50 ticket (available here) gets you the chance to hobnob with the cider makers from the region who are at the core of Cider Week’s mission, plus this year we’re adding in the ciders from the U.K., Spain and France, in addition to some great ciders from other regions across the U.S., all part of the Wide World of Cider!

  • Virtue Sidra (on draught) with Greg Hall (who will be giving a special presentation at 6 p.m.),

  • Naked Flock,
  • and Farnum Hill with Steve Wood (presentation at 4 p.m.),

  • Spanish Sidra from Asturias region,
  • Others TBA.

On the beer side of things, we’ll have special fall brews (fresh hop and harvest beers) from Carton, Barrier, Bridge & Tunnel (join Rich Castagna at 3 p.m. for a special beer seminar), along with other brewers who will be in attendance. Your ticket to Cider Sessions grants you free admission to the post-event talks with Steve, Rich and Greg!

And if it’s a more intimate gathering you prefer, be sure to get your ticket to the Vermont Sail End of Cider Week Dinner (with beer/cider option) on October 28th. Vermont Sail Freight will be coming down the Hudson with our order on Sunday, and we’ll be cooking up this farm-to-ship-to-chef prix fixe dinner the next day. It doesn’t get fresher than this! Iberian Beer Night at Jimmy’s No. 43: Stillwater and L’anjub “Aloja”

We’re shaking things up tonight and instead of our regular Tuesday Tasting, we’ll have Johnny Brilliant and Jessica Garcia Agullo from Iberian United visiting. They’ll be here with their latest collaboration beer between Brian Strumke’s Stillwater and L’Anjub. “Aloja” is a 6.9% ABV dry Saison. Brian brewed this new beer with Spanish nugget hops from Leon and a new saison yeast, which gives off white pepper tones. The water used to brew the beer affected the way the yeast activated, resulting in a lot of lively effervescence and a “prickly” sensation. The effect is very much like champagne, which makes for a challenging tap situation. We plan to be able to pour from our keg, but we’ll also have some bottles for back up just in case.

The name, “Aloja”, refers to a mythical Iberian water woman (L’Anjub means “water cistern”… we hope that Stillwater needs no translation). This creature was both attracted and attractive to human men, so they would often leave the water to breed with mortals. However, the Aloja is a very jealous bi… beast! So best not to cross her!

Oktoberfest For October? You Betcha!

OktoberfestSteinWe’re loving our German “biers” so much that we’ve decided to continue our Oktoberfest celebration into October proper (many craft beer lovers know that the official Fest ended on Sunday). That said, we contributed to an article over at Complex on how to be an Oktoberfest expert, and we’ve got a great line-up for tonight’s Tuesday Tasting (many of these beers are also available a la carte), including:

  • FREIGEIST Hoppeditz
  • THE MONARCHY Methusalem

Then on Thursday, we’ll have Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Urbock for Thursday Tap™. This delicious smoked beer from Brauerei Heller-Trum in the Bamberg area of Germany is a perfect way to warm up on a chilly autumn day.

Then on Saturday (October 12th) it’s our final “Real Oktoberfest” German Gravity Cask and Sausage Lunch where $15 gets you a pint of Weissenhoe Bonator from cask plus a sausage and German potato salad plate.

Our one ticketed event of the month is Alt-Toberfest on Saturday, October 26th at 110 Kent in Williamsburg. Ticket holders will get a hoice of Coney Island Lager, Captain Lawrence, Sam Adams (which will sponsor a Stein Hoisting Competition), Shiner, and other craft breweries TBA. Plus food samples from artisanal vendors such as Campbell’s Cheese and Bronx Baking Co. Plus additional food/drink for sale, indie rock music, tap dancing demos and more. Enter next to Smorgasburg on the waterfront in Williamsburg.

As always, we’ll have regular bar/restaurant service, so you can come in and feel free to wear your lederhosen (for more on being an Oktoberfest expert, check out this Complex article we contributed on).

 

It’s Been An Ale Pleasure: Thursday Tap™ Kentucky Style

Today Jimmy’s No. 43 is gonna go Against the Grain for Thursday Tap™! We’ll be serving up this Louisville, Kentucky, brewery’s An Ale Pleasure, a 12% ABV barrel-aged Imperial Rye Stout with dark, flavorful malts, chocolate, rye, biscuit, and peat notes. The beer is a a collaboration with the Danish brewery ToØl, and has been aged in bourbon barrels, scotch barrels, port barrels, ash, hickory, red oak, white oak, cherrywood, and more.

Normally, we’d be talking about how this big beer is perfect for the cooler weather, but you know what?! It’s still a great beer, and you can let it sit even on an unseasonably hot day like today and get even more flavors and nuance as the beer warms up along side you. So, come on in for a big cool one, and enjoy this interesting and unusual beer (and hard to find on draught locally).

As always, we tap at 5 p.m. and regular bar/restaurant/oyster service is still available. While supplies last.

In like a German, out like a Ghost! What we have on tap for October.

Fall is one of our favorite seasons at Jimmy’s No. 43. We see a lot of our friends coming back into the city, visiting their favorite haunts, and drinking more interesting and unusual beers than we can name! Coming up for us this month are three (count ’em – 3!!) new beer dinners, the return of Harvest Beer & Cider Sessions, plus farm fresh foods straight from regional producers adding goodness to our food menu.
This week we’ll be continuing with our Real Oktoberfest, tapping Franconian gravity casks on Saturday (with a special German sausage and potato salad paired with a pint for only $15). This past weekend we tapped the Weissenohe Bioland Export Beer. It was delish with the sausage plate.
We’ll be bringing in additional menu items, including Belle Rouge chickens from Violet Hill Farm (West Winfield, NY), which we plan to brine in beer and serve up with farro risotto and braised kale. Plus, at the end of the month we’ll be having some frest products from Vermont shipped in… as in literally shipped in via Vermont Sail Freight Project!

  • October 16th – “Sacred & Profane” Jewish pork dinner (we told you, it’s sacred and profane) paired with Abbey Ales as a part of our Abbey Beer Week (October 10-17). Tickets available here.
  • October 21st – Cider Week NY prix fixe cider dinner with Farnum Hill’s Steve Wood. This one sold out last year and is a highlight of Cider Week NY (October 18-27). Tickets here.
  • October 28th – The aforementioned Vermont Sail 5-course prix fixe dinner. Menu TBA (we’re putting in the order this week, but we can promise real maple syrup will be involved) and tickets available here.
