Welcome July Good Beer Month

JGBM2016The fireworks were awesome and we’re deep in to summer and it’s July Good Beer Month in NYC! We’re proud to be celebrating the month where great beer makers, craft beer, the bars that serve them up and the many industry professionals that make NYC (and NY State) an awesome place to be part of the brew scene.

This month we’ll have several cool events – and don’t forget that we’ll be celebrating the Summer of Gose all month long, as well – including a Cicerone* Appreciation night on Tuesday, July 12th, and a special beer dinner featuring a menu from Crimson & Sparrow paired with Hudson Valley beers on Monday, July 18th.

*The Cicerone program is part of the “beerducation” movement, where industry professionals earn various levels of certification (similar to being a Sommelier in the wine world). We’re going to be hanging out with a diverse group of Cicerones (of all levels) as they mingle and make beer recommendations. This public event will give you a chance to learn more about great craft beer or test your beer knowledge against that of certified professionals.

Be sure to join us for our new summer menu and special beers all month long (and, of course, we’ll still have our custom cocktails, wine, spirits and cider).

We’ll see you soon for July Good Beer Month!

Summer of Gose, Rose and Cider

SUMMERofGOSERemember last year’s Summer of Gose? We’re happy to be bringing back all our summertime favorites, celebrating tart, sour, refreshing and crisp beverages that are perfect for when the temperatures rise.

Among our featured beers this week are:

  • Troublesome Brewing’s Off-Color Gose
  • Leipsiger Gose
  • Westbrook Gose (in cans)

Plus, this Saturday, we’ll be grilling on Manhattan’s waterfront at Little Big BBQ (and Jimmy’s will be open for regular business on Saturday, as well). On Monday (June 20th) we’ll be throwing a party for Heritage Radio Network and Beer Sessions Radio, as we focus on beers of the Hudson Valley (come by Monday evening after 6PM to drink with radio hosts and the brewers we’ll be featuring on the “New Primitives” episode of Beer Sessions Radio). And in just over a week (on Sunday, June 26th), we welcome back one of our favorite cider makers, Eleanor Leger of Eden Ice Ciders, for a cider talk with meet and greet.

Welcome Summer with Great Craft Beer, Empire State Spirits and Brewed Food Brewing Dinner

BF2While it seemed to take forever, summer is at last on the horizon as we head into Memorial Day weekend. We’ll be grilling outdoors at CookOut NYC’s Food Party on the Pier (tickets and info here), but Jimmy’s No. 43 will be open all weekend offering up cool libations, great eats (like our Best Burger), and our cool caverns for lovers of beer, cider, wine and spirits. We’ll also be hosting Plan Bee Farm Brewery on Sunday afternoon, so be sure to drop in and meet the brewer.

And if spirits are your favorite libation, be sure to grab a ticket to next Wednesday’s (6/1) Empire State Spirits of Summer with author Brad Japhe, who will be discussing the NY State spirits scene with pours from 10+ spirits paired with small plates from our kitchen.

The following Wednesday (6/8), we are very excited to be a pop-up location for Brewed Food, a collective “dedicated to pushing the boundaries of the beer and food world” who will be working with our own chef and bringing in guest chefs from Brooklyn Brewery and New Belgium for a beer and food pairing dinner that is out of this world (full menu and ticket link here).

Be sure to keep up with all our events in June, by visiting our calendar page, and we hope to see you soon as we beat the heat at Jimmy’s No. 43!

Join us this week for a Very Special Keg from Pretty Things

FinestRegardsWe’re using the unseasonably chilly weather as an excuse to break out a very special keg that has aged extremely well and we’re tapping with bittersweet pleasure. Our Finest Regards is a Barleywine from Pretty Things Beer & Ale Project, a great gypsy brewery that closed shop last year. Almost none of their beers remains on the market, so this is your chance to try this incredibly nuanced “big” beer (11% ABV) on draught.

What is a barley wine? It’s a strong ale, originally an English style that can age well. “Barley wine” is a term coined for this ale, which is stronger like a wine, but it’s not a wine. A lot of breweries make a barley wine, including Sierra Nevada, and many beer collectors age barley wines to bring out more flavor notes. We could have held this keg for another 6-12 months of aging, but with the slight chill (okay, it’s really cold for mid-May) we thought it was time to tap it.

And if you’re a movie buff, then you know that the Cannes Film Festival is currently taking place. What you may not know is that our Backroom was used as a location in a new film premiering there. Our Backroom is available for film shoots, private parties, corporate events, art spaces and more. For rental inquires, email us.

It’s Whiskey Time

DrinkingAdventurouslyWhether you spell it with an “e” or without, we’re celebrating it neat this week as we feature our deep list of artisan whisk(e)ys from across the US and Europe. Inspired by a chapter in spirits author Jeff Cioletti’s new book, The Year of Drinking Adventurously,we’ll be comparing our favorite whiskeys this week and at a special (ticketed – here) tasting with Jeff himself on Thursday (5/12).

The chapters of Jeff’s book break down drinking over a year, and include features on both Irish and Scottish whiskey, which got us wondering, “Who does it best?”

Join Jeff Cioletti for  comparison of six Irish and Scotch whiskeys as he talks about his new book! You’ll sample several different styles and learn all about this great spirit from an expert. Tickets are $15 for the tasting, or $45 includes a hardback copy of Jeff’s book (or $35 for a paperback copy), which he will sign for you.

Raise your glass with us and toast the great peaty beverage that is among our favorite distilled liquors.
